HONESDALE, PA (March 4, 2011)—The Sixth Annual Honesdale Roots & Rhythm, Music & Arts Festival was officially announced last night by Mayor Jonathan Fritz at a special event for sponsors hosted by the Wayne Hotel. The Himalayan Institute (HI) will be continuing in its role as a major contributor with in-kind support in the form of volunteer services and additional resources. The one-day festival relies on over 225 volunteers every year; many of whom live and work at the Institute just north of Honesdale. In addition, the Institute’s Director of Local Operations, Brian Fulp, chairs the 2011 Roots & Rhythm Board of Directors and also serves as the Volunteer Coordinator and Webmaster.

In his remarks, Mr. Fulp said, “This is more than just a simple one-day happening. It’s a cultural event that brings music, fine artisans, quality kids’ programming, and fun family entertainment that this community would otherwise never have access to.” Michael Stanton, Market Manager and General Manager of Bold Gold Media Group, echoed Fulp’s comments, “The reason we’re involved is because we believe in the community; we believe in doing things locally; we believe in Main Street, USA and our heart is in Honesdale and the surrounding communities. Roots & Rhythm brings people from all over the area not just to downtown Honesdale but all over and brings everybody together.” The festival has brought an estimated 21,000 music and arts fans to the greater Honesdale area during the past five years.

Casey Early-Krueger, resident staff at the Himalayan Institute, volunteered for last year’s event and says, “I remember the feeling of people’s spirits lifting as we all came together when the music started pumping and feet started moving and grooving. It was euphoric!”

This year’s event marks the beginning of a new era of sustainability, environmental and economic. Single-stream recycling is a heralded development on the environmental front. For economic sustainability, the famed raffle of year’s past has returned, including a new one-of-a-kind, hand-painted Jeff George guitar. The Board announced a new fundraising tour called “Root Out Your Rhythm” to bring festival activities to area communities every month of the year. Also, look for new event merchandise adding baby and children’s attire to the brand. Festival events include a pre-party at a location yet to be named and an after-party at The Limerick on Main Street, sponsored by the Harvey Agency, The Limerick, and Classic Hits 105 and Thunder 102.

Music will begin downtown at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2011 and end in Central Park that evening around 10 p.m. The downtown music is sponsored and funded by downtown merchants and area businesses. At 1:45 p.m. the first act to take the Main Stage in Central Park is Ryan Hartt & The Blue Hearts with a synthesis of West Coast sounds. At 4:15 p.m., Seth Walker will bring his blues and roots music with an eclectic blend of guitar and soul-filled vocals. Award-winning singer, songwriter, and fiddler Carrie Rodriguez is next up at 6:15 p.m. Closing out the festival at 8:35 p.m., is Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Dave Alvin, well-known in the current Americana music scene. For more information about the festival, see www.honesdalerootsandrhythm.com.

The Institute’s annual ten-day Members’ Homecoming Program begins the same weekend as the festival and organizers expect HI members from around the world to take part in the activities celebrating and supporting the local community. This Members’ Homecoming Program is part of the special programming throughout 2011 celebrating the Institute’s 40th Anniversary, culminating in the commencement of the Year Long Group Meditation, which begins November 2011 and finishes November 2012. Hundreds of meditators are anticipated to participate by meditating up to an hour each day. For more information about the Members’ Homecoming Program, see www.himalayaninstitute.org.

Stormy weather and whatnot of this season may have you deeper into the winter blues now than times past, so I’d venture a bet that while usually you may not mind the slower pace of life January to March, you’ve got more than a bit of cabin fever by now and maybe a moody Monday Valentines wasn’t as “hot” as you would have liked, (it was after all MONDAY, Monday! ARGH!)???

So even if your New Year’s resolution wasn’t to make your social time pay dividends somehow, someway; I’ve got a perfect solution to end your pain, get you out so you can shake off some rust, stop spending so much of your valuable time in the doldrums, and actually ENJOY yourself without having to leave on a jet plane or such!

What? You ask? Come join the Roots & Rhythm volunteer crew for a special “Root Out Your Rhythm” Tour Event! This month’s event launches our FIRST-EVER, thus DEBUT, that means never-ever seen the light of day before; Roots & Rhythm Trivia Contest! Prizes, fun, laughter, a chance to show off your knowledge of music, Honesdale, Roots & Rhythm IN Honesdale…C’mon, we all know you think you’re the smartest cookie in town (or out) anyway, so come show off!

When? This lah-dee-dah engagement will be hosted at The Hotel Wayne, (1202 N. Main St., Honesdale, PA) on Friday, February 18th from 5 to 8 p.m. Can you say HAPPY HOUR(s)?????

Why? Well, Roots & Rhythm is on the mission to be a sustainable festival year to year and the “Root Out Your Rhythm Tour”, is among many of our first steps where R & R seeks to bring events and awareness of all things Roots & Rhythm, and from time to time, some music to your ears! January was The Crackers at Paupack Hills Country Club, February is this FAB Trivia Contest, and March is lining up nicely but I simply cannot make any “BIG” announcement as of yet, sorry!

Dear Music & Arts Enthusiast:

I’m writing as the chair of this year’s 6th annual Honesdale Roots & Rhythm Music & Arts Festival, Honesdale’s FREE music event & more.

Do you really KNOW the festival? I want to share two things with you now and ONE BIG SURPRISE.

One- Our Commitment: We are continuing our efforts to support the community by delivering fun family entertainment. This includes the now famous Tunes and Tales program sponsored by the Wayne County Arts Alliance, and a variety of FREE musical talent that will run throughout the day into the Honesdale night all around Main & Church Street area.

By improving upon these key elements, we are exposing our community to a variety of arts and entertainment that we wouldn’t otherwise have access to. This has always been the goal of the R&R Festival and is guaranteed to inspire guests from our immediate Wayne county community, and the broader tri-state region to visit Honesdale time and time again.

Two- Sustainability. We have more than 100 sponsors that make this festival a reality. Without their financial support this event would never happen. By looking to the future, along with sponsorships, we are organizing fundraisers throughout the year named “Root Out Your Rhythm” that will help propel the festival into the next decade.

Whether you are a guest, volunteer, or sponsor we thank you for your past and future support. More than 200 people are involved in making this festival a reality and it’s proof that we stand strong together as a community.

I invite you to be part of something bigger than yourself, Honesdale, and all of Wayne county. Mark your calendar now for Saturday, June 18th and visit Honesdalerootsandrhythm.com for regular updates keep your eyes open for that ONE BIG SURPRISE!

See you there!

HONESDALE, PA (December 27, 2010) – High-school senior Rebecca Harvey fuels her 1991 Volkswagen Jetta with refined oil donated by the Total Health Center (THC) located at the Himalayan Institute just north of Honesdale. She and her father, Dave Harvey, converted the engine to run on waste vegetable oil (WVO) after some careful research. They purchased an older, mechanical diesel vehicle and had to restore it prior to the conversion. “They’re happier running veggie oil than the newer cars with computers,” says Mr. Harvey. The gas mileage ranges from 40 miles per gallon in town and 50 on the highway.

In the northeastern Pennsylvania winter, vehicles with converted engines use both diesel and WVO. They must be started with diesel and rely on the heat from the engine to warm the oil before it will flow well. Converted cars must purge the WVO from the injection system after reaching their destination so it does not gel in the lines while parked. Whereas WVO from restaurants requires substantial refinement to be car-ready, oil from the THC’s shirodhara program need only be filtered.

Shirodhara is an ancient ayurvedic healing therapy for clearing and calming the mind. The highlight of the treatment is the steady streaming of warm oil on the forehead for up to 15-20 minutes preceded by a 20-30 minute massage of the feet, neck, and shoulders and followed by a scalp massage.

“Shirodhara is amazingly soothing to the nervous system,” says Mick Grady a licensed massage therapist at the Himalayan Institute’s THC. “It is directed at that part of the brain involved in engaging with the world, being alert and decisive. That steady, warm flow helps us let go of our random thoughts and mental chatter.” Himalayan Institute shirodhara oil is a proprietary blend of nut and flower oils and other botanical extracts known for their adaptogenic properties. Adaptogenic herbs are known to be balancing and restorative.

“Rebecca’s been very dedicated to make our trips to go look at colleges as green as possible even taking fuel with us,” says her father. They were surprised to find actual vegetable oil pumps at Oberlin College in Ohio had actual pumps. She’s looking at majoring in environmental concerns related to the social aspects of getting people to take action to reduce, reuse, recycle. “Even if people don’t do the same thing, maybe there’s something else they can take and do to make a difference.”

Asked about the odor of combustion with shirodhara oil, Mr. Harvey says, “It’s wonderful. It smells fragrant and pleasant in the car and out in the street, kind of like burnt lavender. Used restaurant oil smells more like fatted french fries.”
